Default How to create sub-domains?

I would like to know how to create a sub-domain in a joomla 1.5 based website. Can we use the same joomla admin panel and use separate template to design the sub-domain. Please help.

Hello mawia,

To create a subdomain

1. login to your hosting control panel (cPanel)
2. Click Subdomains Icon
3. On the next page, under "Create a Subdomain" write the name you want to make as a subdomain in the first box
* The Document Root box will be automatically filled by the system (you may change it if you wish)
4. Click Create

The system will then take a minute to create your specified subdomain.

This process will also create a sub-folder under your public_html folder with the same name as filled in the "Document Root box".

Now you can install another Joomla Application in this sub-folder with its own interface and admin panel. You need to create a separate MySQL DB also for this install.

This installation can then be accessed via the URL: http://subdomain.domain.com and will not conflict with your Joomla install at the root level.

I believe you can make the new install use the old database by changing the db details in config.php file, but since the template configuration settings is stored in database, changing these values will also reflect the change in the old installation. In another words, you cannot keep different templates on different joomla installs using the same database.

I have not tried it though, but if you get any success in this just post your findings here for others to get some knowledge out of it.

Thanks
